Our Learn-To-Swim Programs in North Brisbane

Babies — Brisbane, QLD — Family Aquatics

Babies (3 – 6 months)

Give your baby a head start, by helping them develop their first basic water skills and introduce them to water safety. As this class is all about water familiarisation with your little one, it begins with water conditioning, a technique used to develop water confidence and acceptance. Your little one will learn to accept water through activities like our “It’s Raining, It’s Pouring” activity, where water is poured on their bodies and faces.

As progression continues your child will be introduced to various other skills like blowing bubbles, holding their breath when submerged (part of water conditioning), being buoyant and other mobility skills.

These classes are filled with song and rhyme so that the lesson remains enjoyable for both you and your child. Your teacher will explain each skill, why it’s necessary and demonstrate how to execute it. It is also important to keep eye contact, smile and offer encouragement.

You are encouraged to practice these skills at home with your little ones. Early swimming lessons will also help to improve your child’s coordination and balance as they grow.

Infants 6-12 months

This class is for babies that are a little order and whom have stronger mobility skills. The aim of this class is based around the education of the parent/guardian. Your swim instructor will support you in communicating safety rules, goals, techniques and expectations of your little one.

There is a continued focus on water familiarisation and confidence building through water conditioning, as your child continues to develop their breath control skill.

As your child is more mobile, we begin to introduce the skill of “reach and catch”. Your little one will be introduced to the very basic kicking and reaching skills, through activities such as kicking across the pool, on their tummies, and reaching for the balls.

Buoyancy is another component of this level, where you will assist your little one to float on your back.

Water safety is another important aspect of our lessons. Both you and your child will be taught Monkey-Monkey and assisted climb outs and fall ins, where grip strength and survival skills are developed.

Again, you will be encouraged to practice these skills at home with your little ones.

Infants — Brisbane, QLD — Family Aquatics
Toddlers Level 1 — Brisbane, QLD — Family Aquatics

Toddler 1 (1- 2 years)

This class is about combining all the skills introduced previously and further developing them and extending your child’s confidence. Water conditioning will continue to be a focus until your child is ready to be progress to level one.

Now your child will be encouraged to pour water over their bodies and faces themselves. Another element to water conditioning will be submersion. You will help to encourage your child with songs like “Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear”.

You and your child will continue to develop kicking and paddling skills, with the use of the mat and games such as reach and catch with various toys.

Toddler 2 (2 – 2.10 years)

This class is basically a bridging class between all the skills previously introduced and moving forward into the independent lessons. The objective of this class, and with the assistance of you, the parent/guardian, is to continue developing your child’s independence of water safety and water confidence.

By the time you child is ready to progress to independent lessons, they will have gained the skills and ability to sit on edge of pool, safely slide in and hold on to edge of pool. Your child will become confident in:

Executing their “monkey” skills and move along the pool’s edge

Have water acceptance to have face fully submerged in water and blow bubbles (water conditioning).

Further develop their kicking and paddling skills both with and without assistance

Float on their front and backs

Fall in and recover back to wall (reach and catch) and climb out

Toddler Level 2 — Brisbane, QLD — Family Aquatics
Level 1 — Brisbane, QLD — Family Aquatics

Level 1 (3+ year)

This is the first non-parent/guardian class where your child will independently take this lesson with their swim instructor. This class will begin with recapping water conditioning and water safety. Your child will be asked to demonstrate their eyes (using googles) and ears in the water, blowing bubbles, kicking and paddling arms and more.

Your child will begin to follow a lesson plan that aims at achieving specific skills to ensure that your child has the best possible outcome of becoming an independent and confident swimmer. Your child will now begin to use basic techniques, with the use of kick boards and noodles, where they will learn to better propel themselves through the water in a more streamline position.

Your child will be encouraged to combine different elements of swimming together. For example, swim to their teacher, perform a back float and then swim back to the platform.

Level 2

Now that your child is older and has gained better water acceptance and breath control, your child’s swim instructor will begin to introduce stroke technique. This will be broken down to several elements. Firstly, you child will work on improving and strengthening their body positioning.

Your child will continue to build on strengthening floating on their backs, with and without the use of a kickboard. To keep the lessons fun, games will be played at the end of the lessons. Games are designed around water safety and conditioning.

Level 2 — Brisbane, QLD — Family Aquatics
Level 3 — Brisbane, QLD — Family Aquatics

Level 3

This level is about stroke progression. Your child will be gaining confidence in putting elements of their stroke together.

This will encourage your child to think about the timing of their movements for their stroke to become a continuous motion.

Level 4 — Brisbane, QLD — Family Aquatics

Level 4

Now that your child is competent in producing basic freestyle arms, they will then focus on learning bilateral breathing.

This will of course be taught using a kickboard so that your child can practise rolling and turning their heads for a breath on both sides. By the time your child is ready to progress to the next level, they will be able to swim both freestyle and backstroke unassisted.

Level 5 — Brisbane, QLD — Family Aquatics

Level 5

Your child will now be perfecting both their freestyle and backstroke techniques and will be capable of swimming at least a minimum of four laps of the pool.

At this level, breaststroke will be introduced, as this is a new skill to learn. By the end of this level, your child should confidently be able swim a minimum of four laps, with good arm and kick technique, good timing and glide.

Level 6 — Brisbane, QLD — Family Aquatics

Level 6

This is our stroke development level within our Learn-to-Swim Program. Your child will continue to improve their technique for freestyle, backstroke and breaststroke, as well as be taught how to swim butterfly.

Like previous taught stokes, your child’s swim instructor will break down each stoke into separate elements. When your child is ready to graduate this level, they will have gained the correct skills and techniques to confidently and independently perform all four stokes.
